The Dairy Maids and the Hired Man: The Face-Off Part 5

Three strapping candidates, one position to fill, and after individual interviews, the Dairy Maids still can't decide on their new hired man. Kenny, Brett, and Travis are going to have to display their skills in public for the Dairy Maids and the dairy guests.

Understanding of dairy equipment, check. Application of production stimulants, check. Technique--here's where the Dairy Maids separate the men from the boys.

Part Five of a five part series, because any old hired man won’t do for this specialized dairy.

Here's a snippet:

Dirk escorted the three toward the stanchions, and the arena quieted under his booming voice. “Ladies, gentlemen. Thanks you for joining us here today. We have three strapping young men, all anxious to bale hay and clean stalls…” His word got drowned in a gale of laughter. He waited a moment for the mirth to die down.

Dirk wasn’t exactly wrong, Kenny did figure to do all those chores too, but the care and milking of Dairy Maids was one hell of a lot more important to him.  He could drive a tractor anywhere.

“Our Dairy Maids are having a rugged time choosing, so we’re going to have a little bit of a face off. Those of you who know the Dairy have a pretty good idea of what we’ll ask these young men to do. Ladies, we need three volunteers.”

The brunette who’d been dumped that morning by Grumpy Applicant popped up from the bleachers. “I will!” She ran to the group to twine her hand into Travis’s. Guess she liked the ideas behind that knowing smile.

One of the near women whispered to another, “Of course Rita will.”

Her companion just laughed. “And show us what she hasn’t got anymore.”

“We need two more volunteers.” Dirk scanned the group. “Ladies?”

Wouldn’t Amy or Taylor stand up? No, those two remained seated, but blew him kisses. Guess  private interviews were different than this. Didn’t they like him well enough to stand up again?  How about India or the others who’d interviewed them this morning? Nope, all seated.

“I just fed…” and “Damn, I wish I wasn’t two hours from my next…” explained the lack of assistance.

The busty redhead in dark blue whose sanity had also been questioned by the grouch stood up slowly. “I will.” She approached Kenny to introduce herself. “I’m Mindy.”

“Hi, Mindy.” Kenny smiled down. “Thanks for stepping up. I’ll do my best for you.”

But no third woman came forward, even when Dirk called again. “Dairy Maids? Someone who hasn’t already interviewed one of these fellas?” Taylor and Amy pouted, which warmed Kenny’s heart a bit. They weren’t getting up because they were disqualified for this morning.  “Brett, a moment with you.” They stepped aside for low whispers and a handshake. Kenny had time for elation at someone getting eliminated, just like that, which turned to pity for the guy, who slipped away, wouldn’t even stay to watch. Guess the only competition now was Travis, whose grin was twice as wide as before.

“Folks, lets get started with our candidates for the dairy’s hired man. Gentlemen, given what you’ve learned so far about the dairy, we’re going to ask you to help your companions into the stanchions for a milking, and demonstrate your prostaglandin application technique for us. Fellas, go to.”

Dirk sat down to watch, with as much interest as the rest of the audience. Showtime.
